High School Seniors: Styling for Senior Session Perfection

It’s all in the details.

I LOVE doing sessions for high school seniors.  They are my favorite sessions to do because their energy and excitement is so contagious!  This year is especially fun for me as the 6th graders from my first year of teaching are heading into their senior year.  I keep in contact with quite a few of them and have been able to watch them grow into amazing young adults – but I will have memories of them sitting in my 6th grade English class burned into my brain forever.  *sigh*

This year, as a tribute to the class of 2013, I am bringing some new services exclusively geared toward my senior sessions.  One of my new services is going to be complimentary styling assistance. Planning the perfect senior session all starts here with hair, makeup, & wardrobe ideas.  As the photographer, I have a general plan for how I’d like to see the shoot pan out, however, it’s so important to work directly with the senior to get his/her input.  You want their sense of style to be evident – you are capturing them at one of the most pivotal times in their lives.  The best way to do this, in my opinion, is to sit down with your client and get to know them better long before the session date.  Ask questions and take lots of notes! Making a game plan for their senior session is essential to making their personality shine in front of the camera.

I get a lot of my inspiration for my seniors from sites like and from other clothing stores like Urban Outfitters and Free People.  I love color, texture, and accessories.  When planning your session, make sure that you are thinking about your look as a whole – from head to toe.

As far as hair and makeup goes, I now include these services in my senior package.  The last thing that you want to worry about is your hair and makeup for your shoot.  Additionally, most teens haven’t had many photo shoots done and don’t necessarily understand the importance of a makeup look (and amount of makeup) that is made for the camera.  The best part of my new service? My stylist is available during the shoot for touchups and to change up looks during our session!

High School Students: When it comes to choosing your high school senior session photographer, don’t skimp on the details. This is one of the most exciting times in your life and when you look back at these images in years to come, all of the feelings and emotions of being a young adult should come flooding back.  Your images are symbolic of the end of a chapter of your life, as well as the beginning of a new one.  It is my goal to provide you an complete experience  you will never forget.

Here’s what one of my high school senior street team reps had to say, “You and Sarah {stylist} really make your clients feel so comfortable.  Working with you was so much fun!” – Jessica T.
